Champions” is a heartfelt sports drama based on the true story of Aderes, a team striving to win the Valencian Special Olympics. The film follows Marcus Markovich (Woody Harrelson), a volatile minor-league basketball coach with aspirations of making it to the NBA. After a public outburst leads to his dismissal, Marcus spirals into self-destructive behavior, culminating in a DUI arrest and court-mandated community service coaching a Special Olympics basketball team.
Reluctantly taking on the role, Marcus initially struggles with the team’s challenges and his own prejudices. However, as he gets to know each athlete and their supportive staff, Marcus discovers shared humanity and hidden talents among his team.
