The River 5 on Mzansi Magic Teasers – September 2025: The River is a South African telenovela created by Phathu Makwarela and Gwydion Beynon. Produced by Tshedza Pictures for M-Net’s 1Magic and available on Showmax, it began airing in 2019. Reruns are shown on Mzansi Magic and Mzansi Wethu.
Sindi Dlathu was announced as co-executive producer for season 4, which premiered in February 2022. The series was renewed for a sixth season, set to premiere in February 2023, with Siyabonga Thwala joining the cast.
The River is a South African telenovela exploring the stark divide between the wealthy elite and the struggling common folk living on opposite sides of a river.
In the Season 5 premiere, “Kings, Queens & Paupers,” Refilwe’s hope is renewed, and Mabutho makes a personal vow. The show is an M-Net Original Production created and executive produced by Gwydion Beynon and Phathutshedzo Makwarela of Tshedza Pictures, who are also the head writers.
